Alternative liming blends for fish culture Animal Sciences
Nobre, Mikaely Karine Barbosa; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Lima, Francisco Roberto dos Santos; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Magalhães, Frederico Batista; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; Universidade Federal do Ceará.
Calcium carbonate (limestone) is a safe but slow-acting product for aquaculture liming. Calcium oxide (lime) is a fast-acting but dangerous product. It would be interesting to have simultaneously a safe and fast-acting liming product. The present work aimed to evaluate two alternative liming blends for tilapia culture. The culture water was initially acidified with HCl. Next, the same quantity of CaCO3 (control), Na2CO3+CaSO4 or Na2CO3+CaCl2 was applied to the culture water. There were also non-limed tanks. One hundred and twenty Nile tilapia juveniles (1.6 ± 0.1 g) were stocked in twenty 250-L culture tanks for 10 weeks. All products used were similarly efficient in increasing the alkalinity of water. The probable better environment for algal growth in...

Characterization of foams obtained from cassava starch, cellulose fibres and dolomitic limestone by a thermopressing process BABT
Schmidt,Vivian Consuelo Reolon; Laurindo,João Borges.
Cassava starch, dolomitic limestone and eucalypt cellulose fibres were used to prepare foam trays that could be used to pack foodstuffs. The influence of the cellulose fibre concentration in the composite formulation was investigated using 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40% of fibres. The results indicated that an increase in cellulose fibre concentration promoted a decrease in density and tensile strength of the foam samples. The tensile strength at break for foam trays containing 5% of cellulose fibres was 3.03MPa, whilst the commercial trays of expanded polystyrene used to pack foods in supermarkets presented a tensile strength of 1.49 MPa. The elongation at break of the foam trays obtained in this work varied slightly with increase in cellulose fibre...

Characterization of granite and limestone powders for use as fillers in bituminous mastics dosage Anais da ABC (AABC)
BARRA,BRENO; MOMM,LETO; GUERRERO,YADER; BERNUCCI,LIEDI.
This paper discusses the importance of studies on materials known as fillers from different mineral origins, used in asphalt mixes, specifically in the formulation of mastics. The research was carried out on samples of limestone and granite rock filler and asphalt binder (50/70). The samples were evaluated through semiquantitative chemical analyses by X-ray fluorescence, granulometry by low angle laser emission, scanning electron microscopy, softening point tests, penetration tests, and aggregate-asphalt binder and aggregate-mastic adhesion tests. The results highlighted convergent trends, indicating that the active behavior of the fillers in the mastic formulation is not related to the size of the particles, but rather to their form, surface texture,...

Characterization of the solid residue generated in the detoxification step of sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate and behavior in agricultural soils Bragantia
Godoi,Isamara; Felipe,Maria das Graças de Almeida; Silva,Débora Danielle Virgínio; Leonel,Lilian Vieira; Costa,Mônica Sarolli Silva de Mendonça; Sene,Luciane.
ABSTRACT Overliming is an effective way of neutralizing and reducing the toxicity of the hydrolysates generated from acidic pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass for ethanol production and others biotechnological products. Overliming generates a solid residue whose inadequate disposal may represent an environmental problem. This work aimed at the chemical characterization of the solid residue generated during the detoxification of the sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate and evaluation of its behavior in soil. The solid residue was submitted to physicochemical and granulometric analysis and determination of the contents of sugars, metals and toxic compounds (acetic acid, furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural and phenols). The potential of the residue...

Derris solorioides (Fabaceae), a new limestone species with true-paniculate inflorescences from North-Central Thailand Naturalis
Sirichamorn, Y.; Adema, F.A.C.B.; Welzen, P.C. van.
Derris solorioides is described as a new species and illustrated. This species is only the second calciphilous and true-paniculate species of Derris ever recorded. The species was found in isolated and protected limestone areas surrounded by agricultural areas in Nakhon Sawan province, North-Central Thailand. It is characterized by its rather smaller flowers but with more ovules than other species of Derris, and 1-winged pods showing a dark-coloured pericarp around the seeds without thickening of the pericarp. The characters of the pods are similar to those found in Solori, a genus once synonymized with Derris and, therefore, the epithet ‘solorioides’ was assigned. This species appeared to be a distinct taxon in the molecular phylogeny, separate from its...

Influence of liming on residual soil respiration and chemical properties in a tropical no-tillage system Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Marcelo,Adolfo Valente; Corá,José Eduardo; Scala Junior,Newton La.
Because of the climate changes occurring across the planet, especially global warming, the different forms of agricultural soil use have attracted researchers´ attention. Changes in soil management may influence soil respiration and, consequently, C sequestration. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the long-term influence of liming on soil respiration and correlate it with soil chemical properties after two years of liming in a no-tillage system. A randomized complete block design was used with six replications. The experimental treatments consisted of four lime rates and a control treatment without lime. Two years after liming, soil CO2 emission was measured and the soil sampled (layers 0-5, 5-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm). The P, Ca2+ e Mg2+ soil...

ABSTRACT: Soils which are cultivated with grapevines have high available copper (Cu) content, which can be toxic to cover crops cohabiting vineyards, such as black oats. This study aimed to assess the effect of liming in reducing Cu toxicity in black oats grown in sandy soils. Samples of a Typic Hapludalf were collected at 0-20cm, dried and subjected to the addition of Cu (0 to 50Mg kg-1) and limestone (0, 1.5, and 3.0Mg ha-1). The soil was placed in a rhizobox and black oats were grown for 30 days. We assessed root and shoot dry matter production, copper (Cu), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) contents in the tissues; Cu content in the root symplast and apoplast, as well as Cu, carbon and pH values in the rhizosphere and bulk soil. Liming reduced Cu...

MANAGEMENT OF ROOT ROT IN AVOCADO TREES Rev. Bras. Frutic.
SILVA,SIMONE RODRIGUES DA; CANTUARIAS-AVILÉS,TATIANA; BREMER NETO,HORST; MOURÃO FILHO,FRANCISCO DE ASSIS ALVES; MEDINA,RICARDO BORDIGNON.
ABSTRACT Root rot (Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands) is one of the most restrictive factors to avocado growing in main producing regions worldwide. In Brazil, scientific reports on the effectiveness of control methods are scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of gypsum applications and dolomitic limestone to the soil and potassium phosphite sprays in controlling this disease in ‘Hass’ avocado, grown without irrigation. The application of dolomitic limestone or gypsum alone is not effective to recover plants affected by root rot. The application of potassium phosphite, combined or not with dolomitic lime or gypsum enables the partial recovery ‘Hass’ avocado plants affected by the disease.
